Working online for the South Kensington research was difficult to say the least. Aside from the frustration of not being able to actually see most things personally and not feel the wonder of going on my first academy research in a subject I enjoy, the project became a lot harder because of the lack of possibilities for research.
Reflecting on my work I do not feel unsatisfied with what I collected, I believe I did the best I could with the resources I had and the situation I was. However, I did felt creatively limited within the amount of images I could have accessed.
The images from the museum research I chose were appealing to me, but not exciting and interesting. Perhaps aesthetically they were similar, but they were not connected so I felt a bit like the images were floating in my research. On the bright side of this research it did enable me to learn a lot about the V&A museum, from which I collected my research, but also about history and culture as well. For those reasons and the fact that aesthetically my research did came together nicely I believe I did a fine job at this task.
Moving on to the profiles, the street style research it again felt quite limited and the same. Maybe I could have done better, ask for better images from people I knew or figure something else for this task but that wasn’t the case and the people I did my work with did have similar styles most of the times. I did try to compensate on the layout of my profiles to make it more interesting, but it still felt kind of dull. I did, however, enjoyed doing these consumer profiles much more than the one I first did, it came more naturally and exciting then the one in toolbox session 2. I understood better what it meant to create a consumer profile, so I feel like something nice came out of it, academically speaking.
For the last part of the task, I did it recently when I was already in London and out of quarantine so it was more exciting and better to create. The first one I visit a store that I knew had a nice architecture and interior design that I wanted to analyse properly. I did feel like I collected some great material, but it wasn’t a store a felt too comfortable so I think that my research seems kind of distant and superficial. The second one, on the other hand, was a store from a brand I very much like, and the environment and staff made me feel comfortable in the store which I believe contributed to deliver a better performance when I collected my research.
